Fanney Khan

            ‘Fanney Khan’ is a story of hopes, dreams and relationships. It’s about a father who will stop at nothing to put his daughter on the grand stage as the next singing sensation of India. It is the remake of the 2002 Oscar nominated Belgian film Everybody's Famous.

He couldn’t become Mohammad Rafi, but harbours a dream of his daughter becoming Lata Mangeshkar. Prashant Sharma (Anil Kapoor) popularly known as Fanney Khan among his gulley friends, works hard to make ends meet, idolises Shammi Kapoor and lives only for his dream of superstardom. He fails to achieve that and hence pins his hopes on his new-born, even naming her Lata (Pihu Sand). Now in her teens, Lata not only sings well but also dances like a dream despite her plus size that regularly makes her an object of body shaming on stage.

Anil Kapoor hits all the right notes as a beleaguered father, who is often reprimanded by his own child for being so unflinchingly dedicated in his mission to see her succeed. He strikes the right balance for a middle class man in Mumbai struggling between dreams and reality. This even as his wife Kavita (Divya Dutta) continues to be his empathetic voice of reason. As a debutante, Pihu Sand captures the vulnerability of her character, but one never understands her constant grouse against her father. As the hotshot singer Baby Singh, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looks befittingly gorgeous, but her storyline is etched without much effort or logic. The talented Rajkummar Rao as Prashant’s trusted friend Adhir, shows his usual flair within a limited scope. While Rajkummar’s chemistry with Aishwarya seems forced, his comic timing comes to the rescue. 

Film’s narrative goes slightly out of tune in second half. For example, there is no real backstory for Baby Singh and the only person in her life is a creepy manager, who wants her to stage a wardrobe malfunction for a reality show.

While the second half is long and laborious, earnest performances keep the boat afloat. For a musical, Fanney Khan’s soundtrack doesn’t live up fully except the Achche Din song which is pleasant and the finale song that exudes energy.

Overall, ‘Fanney Khan’ is a star studded musical that starts on a high note and has its moments of glory. It shows how parents live their dreams through children.

It does strike a few wrong chords to culminate into an emotional yet convenient climax. However, the showstopper is clearly Anil Kapoor with a knockout performance that makes ‘Fanney Khan’ worth a watch.

                     रिश्तों के बीच बुनी गई है 'फन्ने खान' की कहानी। यह एक ऐसे पिता की कहानी है, जो अपनी बेटी को भारत का अगला सिंगिंग सेंसेशन बनाने और उसे एक बड़ा मंच देने के लिए किसी भी हद तक जाता है। 

 वह खुद मोहम्मद रफी तो नहीं बन पाता लेकिन अपनी बेटी को लता मंगेशकर बनाने के सपने जरूर देखता है। सुपरस्टार बनने का ख्वाब देखने वाला प्रशांत शर्मा (अनिल कपूर) जो कि अपने दोस्तों के बीच फन्ने खां के नाम से ज्यादा चर्चित है, अपने सपने को पूरा करने के लिए जी तोड़ मेहनत करता है। वह बॉलिवुड ऐक्टर शम्मी कपूर की पूजा तक करता नजर आता है और बस ऐसा लगता है कि जैसे वह सिर्फ सुपरस्टारडम के अपने सपने को पूरा करने के लिए ही जिंदा है। हालांकि, वह अपने इस ख्वाब को पूरा नहीं कर पाता और उसकी उम्मीदें अपनी नवजात बच्ची से बंध जाती हैं। यहां तक कि वह उसका नाम भी लता (पीहू सैंड) ही रखता है। लता बड़ी होती है और वह न केवल अच्छा गाती है बल्कि डांस भी अच्छा करती है। हालांकि, प्लस साइज़ होने की वजह से वह स्टेज पर लगातार बॉडी शेमिंग का शिकार भी होती है। 

प्रशांत अपनी बेटी को स्टार बनाने के लिए सबकुछ करता है और यहां तक कि अपने इस ख्वाब को पूरा करने के लिए जो उसपर जुनून सवार है उसके लिए अपनी ही बच्ची से फटकार भी सुनता है। उन्होंने मुंबई के एक मिडल क्लास व्यक्ति को लेकर बेहतरीन बैलंस बनाने की कोशिश की है जो कि अपने सपने और सच के बीच खूब मशक्कत करता है। उसकी वाइफ कविता (दिव्या दत्ता) भी उसके इस सपने को सच करने में हमेशा उसके साथ होती है। बतौर डेब्यू ऐक्टर पीहू ने अपने किरदार को काफी संवेदनशीलता के साथ जीया है, लेकिन जो चीज समझ से परे है वह है लगातार उसका उसके पापा से शिकायत। हॉट सिंगर बेबी सिंह के किरदार में ऐश्वर्या राय बच्चन काफी गॉरजस दिख रही हैं, लेकिन उनकी कहानी पर ज्यादा मेहनत नहीं ही की गई। टैलंटेड ऐक्टर राजकुमार रावप्रशांत का काफी अच्छा दोस्त है। राजकुमार राव के साथ उनकी केमिस्ट्री अस्वाभाविक नज़र आती है, जो कि कॉमिडी वाले सीन में छिप जाती है। 

फिल्म की कहानी की राह सेकंड हाफ में थोड़ी भटकती हुई दिखने लगती है। जैसे कि बेबी सिंह की कोई रियल बैकस्टोरी नहीं है और उनकी लाइफ में केवल उनका एक मैनेजर है जो बस यही चाहता है कि एक रिऐलिटी शो में स्टेज पर वह (बेबी) वॉरड्रोब मैलफंक्शन का शिकार हो जाए। फिल्म का सेकंड हाफ काफी लंबा और कठिन नज़र आता है। 'अच्छे दिन' को छोड़कर म्यूज़िकल फिल्म 'फन्ने खां' का साउंड ट्रैक उतना शानदार नहीं बन पड़ा है। 

कुल मिलाकर 'फन्ने खां' सितारों से भरी एक म्यूज़िकल ड्रामा फिल्म है, जिसमें सितारे अपनी आवाज का जादू बिखेरते दिखते हैं। यह फिल्म दिखाती है कि कैसे कोई पैरंट्स अपने सपनों को अपने बच्चों के जरिए सच कर दिखाना चाहता है। इस फिल्म के शो स्टॉपर साफ तौर पर अनिल कपूर हैं, जिन्होंने अपने बेहतरीन अदाकारी का परिचय दिया है और जिसके लिए आपको 'फन्ने खां' एक बार जरूर देखनी चाहिए।
