This is a retelling of the classic tale of Laila and Majnu set in contemporary Kashmir. It’s not the first time that this classic tale of two star crossed lovers is being translated into celluloid. In the age of rom coms, debutant director Sajid Ali has ensured there are plenty of reasons, even for the new generation to watch this tale.

What starts off as puppy love between Laila and Qais quickly builds up into something beyond the control of the two. The tragic fact that they are not destined to be together, keeps looming in the background and there is a sense of foreboding even in the happy scenes. Imtiaz Ali’s layered writing captures that feeling of doomed love well, while also tapping into the mystique of the tale.

The freshness that the lead pair brings to the film and their characters, adds to the movie watching experience. They share a certain raw passion on screen which is one of the key requisites for a story that throbs with passion and romance. The actors make it easy for you to believe in their story on the strength of their performances. When his love turns to insanity, Avinash Tiwary packs intensity into his performance. The film gets a bit overwhelming towards the end, but undoubtedly it’s a worthy debut. Tripti looks beautiful right through the film and she manages to explore the untamed side of her character to great effect.

The new-age Laila Majnu’s courtship has a 'Maine Pyar Kiya' kind of touch and innocence to it. There are several MPK references also thrown into the film. The narrative has, as many as, 10 songs, but you never feel they’re too much. The tracks are weaved in seamlessly into the screenplay. Niladri Kumar and Joi Barua’s music is one of the highlights of the film. Towards the end, the film dips considerably, as it tries to wrap up the loose ends.

Imtiaz Ali’s movies have depicted the beauty of Kashmir in the past, and his brother Sajid continues to paint its beauty on the big screen. The beautiful locations become a metaphor for the love and the longing. Cinematographer Sayak Bhattacharya has done justice to the exotic locales on showcase.

This is a love story of extremes and at times, the parts of the film do seem a bit unbelievable. When you’re retelling a classic tragedy about undying and unrequited love like 'Laila Majnu', you can’t expect bubble-gum romance. Sajid’s effort is achingly honest and it is visible throughout the film. In his first film, he takes a very deep look at romance and there’s definitely no space for frivolity here. With all its intensity and passion, it's a good break from breezy romcoms and one that will stir emotions within.



                   अपनी अलग पहचान बना चुके डायरेक्टर इम्तियाज अली के भाई साजिद अली के निर्देशन में बनी पहली ही फिल्म अब तक रिलीज नहीं हो सकी। जॉन अब्राहम की प्रॉडक्शन कंपनी के बैनर तले इस फिल्म के साथ ऐसे कुछ विवाद जुड़े कि यह फिल्म अब तक सिनेमा के पर्दे पर नहीं पहुंच सकी। ऐसे में इम्तियाज ने भाई को एकता कपूर के बैनर तले बनी इस फिल्म के निर्देशन की कमान सौंपी, बेशक इस बार भाई ने हर कदम पर उनका साथ दिया और फिल्म इस बार सिनेमा के परदे तक पहुंचने में कामयाब रही। अगर आप 'लैला मजनू' को लीड किरदार में रखकर फिल्म बना रहे हैं तो हॉल में बैठा दर्शक आपकी फिल्म को कहीं न कहीं लैला मजनू की अमर प्रेम कहानी के साथ जोड़कर देखेगा, लेकिन ऐसा करते हुए दर्शक खुद को ठगा हुआ महसूस करता है। वैसे भी नई स्टार कास्ट को लेकर फिल्म बनाना और बॉक्स ऑफिस पर फिल्म को हिट कराना आसान नहीं होता, ऐसा ही कुछ इस फिल्म के साथ भी नजर आता है। कश्मीर की बफीर्ली वादियों के बैकग्राउंड में बनी यह फिल्म एक अलग ही प्रेम कहानी को पेश करती है। 

कश्मीरी युवक कैस भट्ट (अविनाश तिवारी) के पापा एक नामी अमीर बिज़नसमैन है, कैस के पापा और लैला (तृप्ति डिमरी) के पापा के बीच दुश्मनी है। इन दोनों के बीच छत्तीस का आंकड़ा बना हुआ है। 
'लैला मजनू' की कहानी कश्मीर के रहने वाले कैस भट्ट (अविनाश तिवारी) और लैला (तृप्ति डिमरी) की है। कैस के पिता बहुत बड़े बिज़नसमैन हैं और लैला के पिता से उनका छत्तीस का आंकड़ा है। इस दुश्मनी के बीच जब कैस और लैला की लव स्टोरी शुरू होती है हॉल में बैठे दर्शक उसी वक्त आसानी से अंदाज लगा लेते हैं कि आगे चलकर यह लव स्टोरी किस ओर करवट लेने वाली है। जाहिर है इन दोनों की फैमिली को उनका यह रिश्ता कतई मंजूर नहीं, लेकिन कैस और लैला फैमिली की परवाह किए बिना एक-दूसरे से मिलते हैं और उनका प्यार परवान चढ़ता जाता है। एक दिन जब इनका सामना अपनी-अपनी फैमिली से होता है तो लैला-मजून की यह लव स्टोरी किस मोड़ पर पहुंच जाती है और इस लव स्टोरी की अंत क्या होता है इसे जानने के लिए फिल्म देखनी होगी।

 कैस यानी मजनू का किरदार निभा रहे अविनाश तिवारी ने अपने किरदार को जीवंत करने के लिए खूब पसीना बहाया है। किरदार को निभाने के लिए अविनाश ने अच्छा-खासा होमवर्क भी किया जो आपको उनके रोल में नजर आता है। बेशक इस फिल्म की रिलीज़ के बाद अविनाश को ग्लैमर इंडस्ट्री में अलग पहचान मिलेगी। तारीफ करनी होगी कि कश्मीरी ऐक्टर मीर सरवर और सुमित कौल की जिन्होंने अपने-अपने किरदार की ऐसी अलग पहचान बनाई कि हॉल से बाहर आने के बाद आपको इन दोनों के किरदार जरूर याद रहते हैं। वहीं तृप्ति डिमरी ने लैला के किरदार को निभा भर दिया। तृप्ति को अगर इंडस्ट्री में लंबी पारी खेलनी है तो उन्हें अब लंबा सफर तय करना बाकी है। डायरेक्टर साजिद को एक बेहद कमजोर और बिखरी हुई ऐसी स्क्रिप्ट मिली जो बार-बार झोल खाती है। फिल्म का सबसे बड़ा माइनस पॉइंट यह है कि लैला-मजनू की इस लव स्टोरी में इकतरफा प्यार नजर आता है जो दर्शकों की किसी भी क्लास को हजम नहीं हो पाता। स्क्रीनप्ले कई जगह बेहद कमजोर नजर आता है, कई बार ऐसे लगता है जैसे एकता कपूर फीचर फिल्म नहीं कोई महाएपिसोड बना रही हैं। वहीं कश्मीर में चारों ओर बिखरी खूबसूरती को कैमरामैन ने बेहद कुशलता के साथ कैमरे में कैद किया है। 

 अगर आज के लैला मजनू की लव स्टोरी के बीच उनके परिवारों के तकरार को देखना चाहते हैं तभी इस फिल्म को देखने जाए। हां कश्मीर की खूबसूरत लोकेशंस फिल्म की यूएसपी है।
