Tumbbad






 The best form of horror is one which plays with your mind. The fear of the uncertain and the unknown is what evokes the strongest emotions. Tumbbad is a perfect example of a film that creates a surreal illusion. This psychological horror has its traditional moments of blood and gore, but the most promising part of this terrifying fable is that it makes monsters out of ordinary men. A greedy human can be a lot more malicious than a cursed supernatural entity. Ideas like that make Tumbbad a real mind-bender and the film's top-notch production design makes it a movie that truly reinvents the horror genre for Indian cinema.


The film kicks off with a CGI sequence of gods and goddesses and a strong allegory of the destructive nature of greed. Tumbbad, an actual village in Maharashtra, becomes the fabric of this tale. Incessant rain becomes the wrath of gods, and you can’t really tell what’s more grey, the characters or the locales. The film is set during the latter part of the British Raj and the period setting adds an air of authenticity to the story. Vinayak Rao, a young Maharashtrian Brahmin boy, loses his innocence when he faces adversity and tragedy. He’s introduced to the legend of Hastar, a mythical creature born out of a goddess, but one who’s selfish urge for gold and food got the better of him. But Hastar’s treasure full of gold medallions is buried somewhere underneath the estate of the local zamindar in Tumbbad. Vinayak’s mother is the caretaker for the zamindar’s wretched wife, referred to as Dadi (grandmom), who is also believed to be cursed by Hastar. Her appearance is so vile that you’ll feel Freddy Krueger from A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984) is beautiful.


Sohum Shah plays the adult Vinayak, who becomes obsessed with unearthing Hastar’s treasure. Slowly and steadily, Vinayak’s obsession turns him into a cold-blooded opportunist and Shah fills in a great deal of grey shades into the performance. His snigger, his eyes and even his limp become emotional cursors for the audience to despise him. It’s a performance par excellence. In perfect sync are the film’s technical departments. Pankaj Kumar’s cinematography captures the wide landscapes of Tumbbad to great effect. Nitin Zihani Choudhary and Rakesh Yadav’s production design has achieved exceptional results in showing the macabre world of Tummbad. Their efforts add great detail to the blood-infused setting. Jesper Kyd’s soundtrack also adds to the proverbial terror in debut director Rahi Anil Barve’s movie.


Writers Mitesh Shah, Adesh Prasad, Anand Gandhi and Barve, have crafted an excellent tale. The movie serves up a good twist during the climactic portions too, one that fits perfectly with the theme. CGI, in the scenes with the monster aren’t always top grade, but that’s a minor grouse. 


Tumbbad is a moody and atmospheric film. Some viewers may find the film a little too deep and disturbing, but fans of Hollywood horror films will be reminded of memorable movies in the genre like Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and Eraserhead (1977). This one is genuinely scary.


महात्मा गांधी ने कहा था कि धरती पर इंसान की जरूरत के लिए पर्याप्त साधन हैं, उसके लालच के लिए नहीं। निर्माता आनंद एल राय और सोहम शाह की ताजातरीन पेशकश तुंबाड का मूल यही है। ज्यादा पाने का लालच इंसान को कई बार शैतान बना देता है। तुंबाड इशारों-इशारों में आपको ऐसे ही रहस्यमयी, रोमांचकारी और डरावने सफर पर ले जाती है। 
फिल्म की शुरुआत 1918 में महाराष्ट्र के एक गांव तुंबाड से होती है। मूसलाधार बारिश से सराबोर रहने वाले इस गांव की एक जर्जर हवेली में एक विधवा (ज्योति मालशे) एक वृद्ध की सेवा में लगी रहती है। गांव में प्रचलित कहानी के अनुसार, यह जर्जर हवेली देवी का सोना ले उड़ने वाले लालची पुत्र हस्तर का मंदिर है, जिसमें खजाना छिपा हुआ है। वीराने में स्थित अपनी टूटी-फूटी झोपड़ी में दो छोटे बच्चों के साथ गुजर-बसर करने वाली यह विधवा इसी सोने की चाह में न केवल बूढ़े की सेवा करती है, बल्कि जान हथेली पर रखकर जंजीरों में जकड़ी उसकी दैत्य पत्नी के खाने का इंतजाम भी करती है। 

बावजूद इसके उसके हाथ सोने के एक सिक्के के अलावा कुछ नहीं लगता, उल्टे अपने छोटे बेटे को भी गंवाना पड़ता है। इसीलिए, वह अपने बड़े बेटे विनायक के साथ हमेशा के लिए तुंबाड गांव छोड़कर पुणे आ जाती है और उससे वादा लेती है कि वह तुंबाड कभी नहीं लौटेगा। विनायक मां से वादा तो कर लेता है, लेकिन अपने पुरखों के खजाने को नहीं भूल पाता और बड़ा होकर उसकी तलाश में लौटकर तुंबाड ही पहुंचता है। अब सोने के इन सिक्कों को बटोरने की लालच में वह किस हद तक पहुंचता है, यह देखकर दर्शक सिहर उठते हैं। 

तीन पीढ़ियों तक चलने वाली यह कहानी हिस्टॉरिकल, पीरियड, फैंटसी, हॉरर जैसे कई जॉनर्स का मिश्रण है, जो श्रीपद नारायण पेंडसे के मराठी उपन्यास तुंबडचे खोत पर आधारित है। निर्देशक राही अनिल बर्वे ने अपनी इस पहली ही फिल्म में ही नए और व्यापक दृष्टिकोण के साथ एंट्री मारी है। फिल्म को सशक्त बनाने में उन्हें क्रिएटिव डायरेक्टर आनंद गांधी का पूरा साथ मिला है। तुंबाड हिंदुस्तानी हॉरर फिल्मों के शरीर में आत्मा घुस जाने और फिर तंत्र-मंत्र, झाड़-फूंक से उसे भगाने वाले घिसे-पिटे ढर्रे को तोड़ती है। 

बढ़िया विजुअल इफेक्ट्स और पंकज कुमार की सिनमैटोग्राफी से दहशत का माहौल शुरू से ही बनने लगता है। कई सीन डर के मारे आंखें भींचने पर मजबूर कर देते हैं। सेकंड हाफ में कुछ सीन रेपटेटिव लगते हैं, जिससे कभी-कभी इंट्रेस्ट कम होने लगता है, लेकिन क्लाइमैक्स रोंगटे खड़ा कर देता है। फिल्म 'सिमरन' में अपनी नैचरल ऐक्टिंग के लिए तारीफ बटोरने वाले सोहम शाह विनायक के रोल में एक पायदान और ऊपर चढ़े हैं। उनकी मां के रोल में ज्योति मालशे और उनके बेटे के किरदार में बाल कलाकार मोहम्मद समद ने भी बढ़िया काम किया है। अजय-अतुल और जेस्पर कीड का संगीत फिल्म के अनुरूप है।

  Kuthiraivaal Movie Review:  Manoj Leonel Jahson and Shyam Sunder’s directorial debut Kuthiraivaal brims with colours and striking imagery. This is apparent as early as its first scene, where its protagonist Saravanan alias Freud squirms in his bed, suspecting a bad omen. As some light fills his aesthetic apartment wrapped with vintage wall colours, his discomfort finally makes sense—for he has woken up with a horse’s tail! The scene is set up incredibly, leaving us excited for what is to come. But is the film as magical as the spectacle it presents on screen? Kuthiraivaal revolves around Saravanan (played by a brilliant Kalaiyarasan) and his quest to find out why he suddenly wakes up with a horse’s tail, and on the way, his existence in life. Valimai

  H Vinoth's Valimai begins with a series of chain-snatching incidents and smuggling committed by masked men on bikes in Chennai. The public is up in arms against the police force, who are clueless. In an internal monologue, the police chief (Selva) wishes for a super cop to prevent such crimes. The action then cuts to Madurai, where a temple procession is underway.then we are introduced to ACP Arjun (Ajith Kumar), the film’s protagonist, whose introduction is intercut with scenes from the procession. Like a God who is held up high, we see this character rising up from the depths. In short, a whistle-worthy hero-introduction scene. We expect that Vinoth has done away with the mandatory fan service given his star's stature and will get around to making the film he wanted to make. And it does seem so for a while when Arjun gets posted to Chennai and starts investigating a suicide case that seems connected to the chain-snatching and drug-smuggling cases from before.
