Fancy Dress marks Guinness Pakru’s maiden foray into production; he co-wrote his story with director Ranjith Skaria. While you appreciate the fact that the slapstick comedian has come this far, he does not manage to give us an engaging experience.
Guinness Pakru and Hareesh Kanaran are crooks who get by with picking pockets and selling ganja in Goa. Mafia man, Gabriel, played by Tamil actor Bala, offers them a job that could change their fortunes, and the duo take off to Kochi. The majority of the first half is set in a gated community, focusing on the antics of the residents there. Pakru and Hareesh get into the residential area under the guise of being part of a play school there. We are left hanging for too long without having the story progress.
Shwetha Menon and Kalabhavan Shajohn are a couple residing there and the thieving duo are focused on them. By the time the story unravels in the second half, we have almost lost interest in the film. And the comedy is very thin on the ground.
The portions with Shwetha Menon is quite poignant and she plays her role very well. The main two characters are okay in their roles. Sowmya is endearing in her small part. But the film doesn’t have much going for it.
