Odunnon

About a decade ago, Noushad Ibrahim shone bright on stages across Kerala with his scintillating performance as ‘Thacholi Othenan’ in the eponymous play produced by Pookode Kalayalam.
The play about the warrior from Kadathanadu was staged around 650 times over a couple of years. A well-written – by Jayan Thrirumana – and well-directed —by Manoj Narayanan — play, it is difficult to imagine if it would have been as effective without Noushad. One still recalls watching him transform into Othenan and bowling the full house over at the Town Hall in Kozhikode on a September night all those years ago.
Noushad’s performance fetched him the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi's award for the best actor in 2009. He went on to enact more memorable roles in plays, like that of Mallan in Nellu, all the while nursing another ambition - to make a film.
That wish has now come true. Odunnon, the feature film he directed is ready for release.
“My original plan was to make a short film, about a man who believes his family is cursed by snakes, but when I narrated the plot to cinematographer Naushad Sherif, he said it had the potential to be made into a feature,” says Naushad. “I felt what he said was right and wrote a script for a longer film, running into nearly two hours.”
He didn’t cast himself in the role of the hero. “That would have put too much stress on me, so I cast Santhosh Keezhattoor,” Naushad says. “I did a smaller role, though. That meant the film could feature as many five artistes who won the Sangeetha Nataka Akademi awards for acting – Shivaji Guruvayoor, Rajesh Sharma, my wife Jaya Noushad, Santhosh and me.”
Completing the film took longer than he expected, to. “We had run into some problems about the use of animals for filming ,” says Noushad. “We had got the permissions earlier, but still it took some time to get the final clearance. Using computer graphics was an option, but to use quality stuff would have been expensive and our budget was low.
The film is produced by V. Sathyan, Sumesh Vaishakh and Shamage Vatakara. “Before its release, we plan to show it at festivals,” he says. “We had a preview of the film at Kozhikode recently. I was happy to find that it was received well.”
Noushad has begun work on the script of his second film. “It will be a commercial one,” he says. “My plan is to make a film that will have many elements of fantasy elements . I hope to finish the writing part soon.”
And writing has been something that has always enjoyed, like acting. “Even while I was acting on the stage night after night, I found time to write,” he says. “I used to write for television and advertising. I have written the script for a series of ad spots for Mohanlal, who, incidentally, has dubbed for Odunnon.”
As for his next role on stage, he says he is keen about an adaptation of Achanum Bappayum, a National-Award winning film directed by K.S. Sethumadhavan in 1972. “I want to continue to act in plays,” he says. “And I want to direct more films too. I hope to do both.”

Kuthiraivaal

Kuthiraivaal Movie Review:  Manoj Leonel Jahson and Shyam Sunder’s directorial debut Kuthiraivaal brims with colours and striking imagery. This is apparent as early as its first scene, where its protagonist Saravanan alias Freud squirms in his bed, suspecting a bad omen. As some light fills his aesthetic apartment wrapped with vintage wall colours, his discomfort finally makes sense—for he has woken up with a horse’s tail! The scene is set up incredibly, leaving us excited for what is to come. But is the film as magical as the spectacle it presents on screen? Kuthiraivaal revolves around Saravanan (played by a brilliant Kalaiyarasan) and his quest to find out why he suddenly wakes up with a horse’s tail, and on the way, his existence in life. Saravanan’s universe is filled with colourful characters, almost magical yet just real enough—be it his whimsical neighbour Babu (Chetan), who speaks about his love for his dog and loneliness in the same breath, or the corner-side cigar...

Maaran

Even as early as about five minutes into Maaran, it’s hard to care. The craft seems to belong in a bad TV serial, and the dialogues and performances don't help either. During these opening minutes, you get journalist Sathyamoorthy (Ramki) rambling on about publishing the ‘truth’, while it gets established that his wife is pregnant and ready to deliver ANY SECOND. A pregnant wife on the cusp of delivery in our 'commercial' cinema means that the bad men with sickles are in the vicinity and ready to pounce. Sometimes, it almost feels like they wait around for women to get pregnant, so they can strike. When the expected happens—as it does throughout this cliché-ridden film—you feel no shock. The real shock is when you realise that the director credits belong to the filmmaker who gave us Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, that the film stars Dhanush, from whom we have come to expect better, much better. Director: Karthick Naren Cast: Dhanush, Malavika Mohanan, Ameer, Samuthirakani Stre...

Gangubai Kathiawadi

STORY:  Based on S. Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges’ hard-hitting book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai,’ ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ chronicles Ganga’s rise to power and fame from a demure small-town girl in Gujarat, to the undisputed queen of kamathipura in Mumbai. REVIEW:  Women invitingly standing at the doorstep of a kotha (brothel) in the bustling bylanes of south Mumbai’s infamous red-light area Kamathipura, is a scene that is real, tragic and dramatic. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, set entirely against this gritty backdrop of Mumbai tells the story of many a young women, who were sold off to brothels for a few hundreds, solely through the eyes of its protagonist Gangubai (Alia Bhatt). It’s sometime in the early 1950s or 1960s when a starry-eyed and naïve Ganga is conned by her own lover Ramnik (Varun Kapoor) to elope with a promise that he will pave the path for her to make it as a heroine in Bollywood. What turns out and the truth as we all know i...
