Pagalpanti

Story: An out-of-luck youngster Raj Kishore (John Abraham) and his friends Junky (Arshad Warsi) and Chandu (Pulkit Samrat) are hired by gangsters Raja (Saurabh Shukla) and WiFi Bhai (Anil Kapoor) in a bid to recover their damages. But this is just the recipe for disaster that brings in more destruction.

Review: At one point in the film, John Abraham’s character Raj declares, “Zaroori nahi ki har cheez ka matlab ho.” This is perhaps the guiding light for the story, screenplay, dialogues and pretty much everything that goes on in Pagalpanti. The problem is not the fact that it is a slapstick comedy, but the fact that there’s little or no semblance of a coherent narrative. From the very first scene, the film is armed with loud action and dialogues trying to be funny, but far from that. And there are a lot of characters, one sillier than the other. While Anil Kapoor once again plays the flashy gangster with his trademark loudness, Arshad Warsi is the funny guy with witty one-liners. John Abraham exudes charm despite his goofy character and Pulkit Samrat once again plays up on his boyish charm. But the three heroines are reduced to looking pretty and mouthing silly lines such as, “Papa kehte hain kiss karne se main pregnant ho jaungi.” Among the character artistes, Saurabh Shukla is impressive as the bumbling mobster who is more funny than scary. There is also a character named Niraj Modi (Inaamulhaq) evidently fashioned on the fugitive businessman Nirav Modi. With an unconvincing Gujarati accent, his character comes off as yet another stereotypical cliché.

Director Anees Bazmee, along with his co-writers, throw in everything into the mix. From exciting car chases to high-octane destruction scenes, from African lions to an entire act involving industrial strength glue – all shot beautifully in the picturesque UK. But nothing sticks, thanks to a weak script. There are far too many songs placed randomly that only add to the runtime. Towards the end, it even meanders into a patriotic subplot that seems more forced.

Even with an enviable starcast and heavy-duty action, Pagalpanti never really manages to pull off more than a few laughs.

Kuthiraivaal

Kuthiraivaal Movie Review:  Manoj Leonel Jahson and Shyam Sunder’s directorial debut Kuthiraivaal brims with colours and striking imagery. This is apparent as early as its first scene, where its protagonist Saravanan alias Freud squirms in his bed, suspecting a bad omen. As some light fills his aesthetic apartment wrapped with vintage wall colours, his discomfort finally makes sense—for he has woken up with a horse’s tail! The scene is set up incredibly, leaving us excited for what is to come. But is the film as magical as the spectacle it presents on screen? Kuthiraivaal revolves around Saravanan (played by a brilliant Kalaiyarasan) and his quest to find out why he suddenly wakes up with a horse’s tail, and on the way, his existence in life. Saravanan’s universe is filled with colourful characters, almost magical yet just real enough—be it his whimsical neighbour Babu (Chetan), who speaks about his love for his dog and loneliness in the same breath, or the corner-side cigar...

Sarkar

In a scene after Sarkar’s protagonist Sundar Ramasamy announces his candidature, he addresses the residents of a colony. The first question thrown at the wealthy corporate honcho is whether he knows the price of tomatoes today. While he admits his ignorance, he uses it to narrate economics, explain how it affects the financial status of the people and finally sways the people to his side. For the large part of the movie, director AR Muragadoss tries to establish that politics is not much different from business, and Sundar, played effectively by Vijay, keeps pointing out how marketing, branding and strategising would help not only win the support of the people but also change the corrupt system. The movie starts by introducing Sundar, a ‘corporate monster’ who not only conquers his competition but annihilates them. His visit to India has many firms worried about his agenda, which...

Maaran

Even as early as about five minutes into Maaran, it’s hard to care. The craft seems to belong in a bad TV serial, and the dialogues and performances don't help either. During these opening minutes, you get journalist Sathyamoorthy (Ramki) rambling on about publishing the ‘truth’, while it gets established that his wife is pregnant and ready to deliver ANY SECOND. A pregnant wife on the cusp of delivery in our 'commercial' cinema means that the bad men with sickles are in the vicinity and ready to pounce. Sometimes, it almost feels like they wait around for women to get pregnant, so they can strike. When the expected happens—as it does throughout this cliché-ridden film—you feel no shock. The real shock is when you realise that the director credits belong to the filmmaker who gave us Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, that the film stars Dhanush, from whom we have come to expect better, much better. Director: Karthick Naren Cast: Dhanush, Malavika Mohanan, Ameer, Samuthirakani Stre...
