Anweshanam

Story: Seven-year-old Ashwin is taken to the hospital by his mom and a family friend, saying he fell from his apartment steps. The police get an anonymous call stating child abuse is suspected in the case and that hospital is trying to cover it up. What now?

Review: Murder or mistake? When gruesome incidents involving children getting injured or killed in their own homes surface, this is a doubt that lurks in the mind of both the society and cops. Anveshanam, flavoured with enough mystery elements from the beginning, is a movie that keeps the audience thinking right from frame one, about this.

Aravind (Jayasurya) and Kavitha (Sruthy Ramachandran) love their little son and daughter, and their home is a mini heaven glittering in their laughter and naughtiness. On a fateful day, Kavitha hospitalises their seven-year-old son Ashwin, alongside their family friend Dr Gautham (Vijay Babu), saying that the boy fell from the stair case. At the same time, cops get a call stating that it’s a possible case of child abuse and they start their investigation. Anveshanam tries to uncover the truth behind the incident.

An emotionally rich and intricately plotted film, Anveshanam can evoke a sense of dread within the viewers regarding how danger hides in the minutest of random things one does even in our private space. The story keeps the audience guessing till the end, and is filled with near-miss moments of tension. The plotting is interesting and so are the few twists that aren’t in your face. The chemistry between the characters are great and the film hits the right spots when it comes to scenes that portray their equations. The result is a twisting tale filled with possibly sinister suspects. Jayasurya, Sruthy, Leona and Vijay Babu give the right, believable texture to their characters.

On the flip side, there is a possibility that the final payoff does not match the build-up. Especially for those viewers who might have been in the let’s-guess-the-psycho mental game. There are also a few heart-wrenching scenes that can be too much, especially for parents with young children, to take as they have semi-raw portrayal of abuse. Also, as the movie twists its way through various plot turns in the second half, a bit of boredom can creep in despite escalating tension on screen.

Anveshanam is definitely an edge-of-the-seat film, which can make anyone, especially parents, think twice before anything they do, once out of the movie hall.

Kuthiraivaal

Kuthiraivaal Movie Review:  Manoj Leonel Jahson and Shyam Sunder’s directorial debut Kuthiraivaal brims with colours and striking imagery. This is apparent as early as its first scene, where its protagonist Saravanan alias Freud squirms in his bed, suspecting a bad omen. As some light fills his aesthetic apartment wrapped with vintage wall colours, his discomfort finally makes sense—for he has woken up with a horse’s tail! The scene is set up incredibly, leaving us excited for what is to come. But is the film as magical as the spectacle it presents on screen? Kuthiraivaal revolves around Saravanan (played by a brilliant Kalaiyarasan) and his quest to find out why he suddenly wakes up with a horse’s tail, and on the way, his existence in life. Saravanan’s universe is filled with colourful characters, almost magical yet just real enough—be it his whimsical neighbour Babu (Chetan), who speaks about his love for his dog and loneliness in the same breath, or the corner-side cigar...

Sarkar

In a scene after Sarkar’s protagonist Sundar Ramasamy announces his candidature, he addresses the residents of a colony. The first question thrown at the wealthy corporate honcho is whether he knows the price of tomatoes today. While he admits his ignorance, he uses it to narrate economics, explain how it affects the financial status of the people and finally sways the people to his side. For the large part of the movie, director AR Muragadoss tries to establish that politics is not much different from business, and Sundar, played effectively by Vijay, keeps pointing out how marketing, branding and strategising would help not only win the support of the people but also change the corrupt system. The movie starts by introducing Sundar, a ‘corporate monster’ who not only conquers his competition but annihilates them. His visit to India has many firms worried about his agenda, which...

Maaran

Even as early as about five minutes into Maaran, it’s hard to care. The craft seems to belong in a bad TV serial, and the dialogues and performances don't help either. During these opening minutes, you get journalist Sathyamoorthy (Ramki) rambling on about publishing the ‘truth’, while it gets established that his wife is pregnant and ready to deliver ANY SECOND. A pregnant wife on the cusp of delivery in our 'commercial' cinema means that the bad men with sickles are in the vicinity and ready to pounce. Sometimes, it almost feels like they wait around for women to get pregnant, so they can strike. When the expected happens—as it does throughout this cliché-ridden film—you feel no shock. The real shock is when you realise that the director credits belong to the filmmaker who gave us Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, that the film stars Dhanush, from whom we have come to expect better, much better. Director: Karthick Naren Cast: Dhanush, Malavika Mohanan, Ameer, Samuthirakani Stre...
