Forensic Story: If the job of a thriller is to keep you on the edge of your seat, Forensic does a good job.

Forensic Review: Does Forensic move at the fast pace that a thriller ought to, with twists that keep you guessing and moments that make you gasp with astonishment? Yes, yes and yes. Is it always logical? No. Not always. There are some glaring omissions and questions that the film, co-written and directed by Akhil Paul and Anas Khan, raise, though it is a sleekly directed film.

Samuel John Kattukaran is a police forensic personnel, who is assigned to the case of a serial killer targeting little girls. Mamta Mohandas plays Chief investigating officer Rithika Xavier. To steer clear of spoiler alerts, let's just say, both parties are slightly uncomfortable to be working on the case together, though thankfully, there is no long-drawn-out drama. Is the case related to a similar one that took place a decade back? If so, the film turns on its head the big reveal that it made at halftime.

Tovino is his usual charming, cheeky self, as the Forensic expert. He manages the drama, the humour and the stunts with equal ease. Speaking of which, special mention for the humour in such a dark film. In fact, it's so dark that there's a patricide even before all the title credits have rolled out.

Mamta is eminently watchable, balancing the role of a tough policewoman with an emotional side. Saiju Kurup and Renji Panicker are solid as always, lending support and adding to the guessing game. In this, the film is quite different to earlier thriller Anjaam Paathira, which was more a story of an investigation, rather than a whodunnit.

Jakes Bejoy's music adds tension to the creepy moments, while Akhil George's camera work is sleek and gritty in turns.

Forensic calls for a bit of a strength of the imagination, but if you get a kick out of putting on an investigator's hat to play a guessing game, this could be just the thing for you.

ഫോറൻസിക് എന്ന ഗംഭീരമായ പേര്. ഇടിവെട്ട് ട്രെയിലർ. ഇവയെല്ലാം സമ്മാനിച്ച വൻ പ്രതീക്ഷകളോടെയാണ് ടൊവിനോയുടെ ഈ വർഷത്തെ ആദ്യ സിനിമ കാണാൻ ഇന്ന് തിയേറ്ററിലെത്തിയത്. സംഗതി കൊള്ളാം. പ്രതീക്ഷകൾ അസ്ഥാനത്താക്കാത്ത നിർമ്മിതി.

'സെവൻത് ഡേ'യ്‌ക്ക് തിരക്കഥ രചിച്ച അഖിൽ പോളും അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ സുഹൃത്തായ അനസ്‌ ഖാനും ചേർന്നാണ് ഫോറൻസിക് സംവിധാനം ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. തിരക്കഥ ഒരുക്കിയിരിക്കുന്നതും ഇരുവരും ചേർന്നുതന്നെ. കോമഡി ഴോണറിൽ പെട്ട സിനിമകൾ ഇരട്ടകളുടെ ക്രെഡിറ്റിൽ മലയാളത്തിൽ മുൻപും പതിവാണെങ്കിലും ഒരു കുറ്റാന്വേഷണ ത്രില്ലർ രണ്ട് പേര് ചേർന്നൊരുക്കുന്നത് മലയാളത്തിൽ ആദ്യമായിട്ടാണെന്നു തോന്നുന്നു. രണ്ടു കാലഘട്ടങ്ങളായി തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് നടക്കുന്ന കൊലപാതക പരമ്പരകളും അതിന്റെ പിറകിലുള്ള കുറ്റവാളിയ്ക്ക് വേണ്ടിയുള്ള അന്വേഷണവുമാണ് ഫോറൻസിക്. പ്രൈമറി സ്‌കൂളിൽ പഠിക്കുന്ന ചെറിയ പെൺകുട്ടികളാണ് കില്ലറുടെ രണ്ടു കാലഘട്ടത്തിലെയും ഇരകൾ.

ആറുകൊല്ലം മുൻപത്തെ കൊലപാതക പരമ്പര കേസ് അന്വേഷിച്ച് പ്രതിയെ പിടിച്ച റിതിക സേവിയർ ഐപിഎസിനെയാണ് ഇത്തവണയും ഡിപ്പാർട്ട്മെന്റ് അന്വേഷണത്തിനായി ചുമതലപ്പെടുത്തിരിക്കുന്നത്. റിതികയുടെ സംഘത്തിലെ ഫോറൻസിക് വിദഗ്ധനാണ് സാമുവൽ ജോൺ കാട്ടുകാരൻ. രണ്ടുപേരും തമ്മിൽ ചില പൂർവകാല ബന്ധങ്ങളൊക്കെയുണ്ട്. അതിന്റേതായ തൊഴുത്തിൽ കുത്തും അന്വേഷണത്തിൽ കടന്നുവരുന്നു.

സംഭവം അഞ്ചാംപാതിര, രാക്ഷസൻ ലൈനിൽ തന്നെയൊക്കെയാണ് പോവുന്നതെങ്കിലും സ്ക്രിപ്റ്റ് പലപ്പോഴും പ്രേക്ഷകനെ കാലുവെച്ച് വീഴ്ത്തി മുന്നോട്ട് കുതിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിക്കുന്ന ഓവർ സ്മാർട്ട്നസ് കാണിക്കുന്നു. ഇത് ഒരേസമയം പോസിറ്റിവും നെഗറ്റിവും ആവുന്നുണ്ട്.

ആശയങ്ങൾ എത്രകണ്ട് പുതുമയുള്ളതാണെന്നതിനൊപ്പം പ്രേക്ഷകന് അതെത്ര ഉൾക്കൊള്ളാനാവുമെന്നതും വിഷയമാണല്ലോ. ഫോറൻസിക് ലാബിലെ കെമിസ്ട്രിയൊക്കെ അനാവശ്യമായി സ്പൂൺ ഫീഡ് ചെയ്യുന്ന സംവിധായകർ അത്യാവശ്യം വിശദീകരണം ആവശ്യമുള്ളിടത്ത് ധൃതിപിടിച്ച് ഫാസ്റ്റ് ഫോർവേർഡ് അടിച്ചു വിടുന്നു. പെട്ടിക്കടയിൽ വരെ സിസിടിവി ഉള്ള കാലത്ത് അന്വേഷണത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഘട്ടത്തിലും പോലീസുകാരാരും നിരീക്ഷണ ക്യാമറയെ ആശ്രയിക്കുന്നേയില്ല എന്നതൊക്കെ അക്രമമായി.

അതുപോലെ തന്നെ സ്ക്രിപ്റ്റിൽ കൊണ്ടുവന്ന ബില്ഡപ്പിന് അനുയോജ്യമായ ഒരു ക്ളൈമാക്‌സോ ടെയിൽ എൻഡോ പടത്തിന് ഉണ്ടായില്ലെന്നതും ഒരു കുറവാണ്. ഇങ്ങനെയുള്ള കുഴപ്പങ്ങൾ പറയാമെങ്കിലും മലയാളത്തിലെ സൈക്കോ ത്രില്ലറുകളുടെ കണക്കെടുക്കുമ്പോൾ ഫോറൻസിക്കിന് ഒരു പ്രധാന സ്ഥാനമുണ്ടാവും.

സാമുവൽ ജോൺ എന്ന ഫോറൻസിക് ഓഫീസർ ടൊവിനോയിൽ ഭദ്രമാണ്. സാധാരണ സിനിമാ കുറ്റാന്വേഷണ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരിൽ കണ്ടുവരുന്ന അമിതബുദ്ധിയുടെ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ സാമുവലിനുമുണ്ട്. റിതികയും മംമ്തയിൽ അടിപൊളി. സൈജു കുറുപ്പിന്ന് ചെറിയ റോളാണ്. പക്ഷെ ശ്രദ്ധ പിടിച്ചുപറ്റും. രഞ്ജി പണിക്കർ, പ്രതാപ് പോത്തൻ, രാമു എന്നിവരൊക്കെ താക്കോൽ സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിലുണ്ട്. പൊതുവെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളുടെ വഴിയോ നായകന്റെ വഴിയോ പോകുന്ന സിനിമയല്ലെങ്കിലും ടൊവിനോയ്ക്ക് ഒരു ആചാരമെന്ന പോൽ റേബ മോണിക്ക ജോണിനെ നായികപോലെ സ്ഥാപിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്.
