MALLI RAAVA REVIEW: Karthik (Sathwik) is a carefree, aimless ninth grader whose sole purpose in life seems to create a ruckus wherever he goes and spend time with his best friend Dumbo. One rainy morning, in a true filmy style, Anjali (Preethi) enters in his life and Karthik is bowled over the second he sees her. But circumstances force them apart until they meet again being adults. Anjali (Aakanksha Singh) asks Karthik (Sumanth) to marry him, but leaves him at the altar on the day of their wedding. Why she leaves him this time around and if they ever end up together, forms the crux of the story.
Malli Raava is a bittersweet tale of how first love remains memorable in a person's life no matter what. The film keeps jumping between 1999 - when they were 14 years old, 2012 - when they meet again and she asks him to marry her and 2017 - when she comes back into his life to invite him for her wedding. The constant to-and-fro is a narrative choice that might not sit well with some viewers, confusing them as to which time frame they're in even though the film isn't hard to follow. Technically, the film seems to be a little weak with the visuals, screenplay and editing failing to make a mark.
What works for the film is its story, music, casting and of course, the simplistic and practical treatment of love. The music, composed by Shravan Bharadwaj, is an asset to the film, with the songs weaved into the story at appropriate times. There are no song and dance sequences shot in exotic locales. And the songs simply conveyed the love two everyday people feel for each other in their thoughts. Despite being oh-so-in-love, Karthik and Anjali somehow never manage to communicate effectively, making it the bane of their relationship. When she has apprehensions, she doesn't voice them out. When she leaves him, he never asks her why. Nor does he question her whenever she comes back into his life; it's only Dumbo who somehow manages to do that.
The characterisations of Karthik, Anjali and Dumbo are sketched out beautifully. Karthik is the fool in love who wants nothing more in life than Anjali and Dumbo's company. Anjali is the apprehensive girl from a broken home who finds it hard to commit despite having a heart filled with nothing but love for Karthik. Dumbo is the perfect friend one could ask for, lending a shoulder in time of need and asking the tough questions that no one seems to be asking; for fear of getting answers they might not like.
There's also the comic character of Karthik's manager and a few others, who do a good job with their roles. They even get ample screen-time so they aren't in the film for the sake of it. Despite their scenes garnering ample laughs, these characters just manage to make a viewer impatient to get back to Karthik and Anjali's story. Annapurna is beautiful in her role as Baama, Dumbo's grandmother, who seems to share a love-hate relationship with Karthik and worries for him as if he is her own.
Sumanth and Aakanksha are beautiful in their roles of Karthik and Anjali. But they are almost overshadowed by Sathwik and Preethi who seem to breathe life into the characters. All four leads get almost equal screen time, and Sathwik and Preethi deliver stupendous performances. There are some dialogues in the film that will connect well with the audience, especially due to their simplicity. When a young Karthik is questioned about his love for Anjali, he states in a matter-of-fact tone, "Cricket ante ishtam, Dumbo ante ishtam, alage Anjali ante ishtam." (I like Anjali just like I like cricket and Dumbo). That dialogue seems to be the summation of his character and the film, both.
Watch this one if you've ever been in love, especially if you know the bittersweet pain of falling in love for the first time. And give it a miss if you're looking for a happy-go-lucky feel-good film.

Malli Raava (U): మీ టికెట్స్ ను వెంటనే బుక్ చేసుకోండి! లైఫ్ అలా సాగిపోతుండగా ఓసారి అనుకోకుండా కార్తీక్ పని చేస్తున్న సాఫ్ట్ వేర్ ఆఫీసుకు అంజలి ఓ ప్రాజెక్ట్ పనిమీద వస్తుంది. చాలా కాలం తర్వాత కలిసిన ఇద్దరూ ప్రేమలో పడతారు. అమెరికా వెళ్లే లోపే కార్తీక్ ను పెళ్లాడి అతడిని డిపెండెంట్ వీసా మీద అమెరికా తీసుకెళ్లి అక్కడే సెటిలవ్వాలనుకుంటుంది అంజలి. రిజిస్టర్ ఆఫీసులో పెళ్లికి అంతా సిద్ధమైన తర్వాత చివరి నిమిషంలో నాకు ఈ పెళ్లి ఇష్టం లేదని చెప్పి అమెరికా వెళ్లి పోతుంది. కార్తీక్ అంటే ఎంతో ఇష్టపడే అంజలి ఎందుకు అలా చేసింది? ఈ ప్రేమకథా చిత్రం చివరకు ఎలా సుఖాంతం అయింది అనేది తెరపై చూడాల్సిందే. హీరో హీరోయిన్ పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ కార్తీక్ పాత్రలో సుమంత్ తన సహజమైన పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్‌తో మెప్పించాడు. అయితే పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ పరంగా చెప్పుకోదగ్గ సీన్లు అయితే ఏమీ లేవు. లుక్ పరంగా జస్ట్ ఓకే. ఇక ఈ సినిమా ద్వారా హీరోయిన్‌గా పరిచయమైన ఆకాంక్ష సింగ్.... అటు అందం పరంగాను, పెర్ఫార్మెన్స్ పరంగానూ పెద్దగా ఆకట్టుకోలేదు. సినిమాలో ఇంతకు మించి చెప్పుకోదగ్గ పాత్రలు ఏమీ లేవు. టెక్నికల్ అంశాలు సతీష్ ముత్యాల సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బావుంది. శ్రవణ్ భరద్వాజ్ అందించిన సంగీతం, బ్యాగ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ సినిమాకు ప్లస్ అయ్యాయి. నిర్మాణ విలువలు బావున్నాయి. ప్రేమ కథా చిత్రాల్లో మనసుకు హత్తుకునే డైలాగులు ఉంటే ఆ ఫీల్ మరోలా ఉంటుంది. కానీ ఈ చిత్రంలో అలాంటివేమీ కనిపించలేదు. ఇక ఎడిటింగ్ విషయంలో కూడా మరింత జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకోవాల్సింది. రోటీన్ తెలుగు ప్రేమ కథ ఒక ఫీల్ గుడ్ లవ్ స్టోరీ తీయాలనే ఉద్దేశ్యంతో ‘మళ్ళీ రావా' కథ రాసుకున్న దర్శకుడు దాన్ని కొత్తగా ఎగ్జిక్యూట్ చేయడంలో విఫలం అయ్యాడు. రోటీన్‌గా తెలుగు సినిమాలో కనిపించే సీన్లు, కాన్సెప్టునే తన సినిమాలో పెట్టడం కాస్త నిరాశ పరిచే అంశమే. ఆసక్తికరంగా లేని స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ఇలాంటి ప్రేమకథను ఎంచుకున్నపుడు స్క్రీప్లే ఆసక్తిగా ఉండాలి. కథను డెప్త్‌గా తీసుకెళ్లి ప్రేక్షకులు భావోద్వేగానికి గురయ్యేలా చేయడం, లేదా ఎంటర్టెన్మెంట్ జోడించి ఫన్ క్రియేట్ చేయడం లాంటివి ఉంటే ఆసక్తిగా ఉంటుంది. అయితే ఈ రెండూ సినిమాలో లోపించాయి. సినిమా చాలా స్లోగా.... సినిమా మొదటి నుండి, చివరి వరకు చాలా స్లోగా సాగింది. ఎక్కడా కూడా కథ వేగంగా సాగిన ఫీలింగ్ కలగదు. ఇంటర్వెల్ బ్యాంగ్ కూడా ఆసక్తికరంగా లేదు. ఫస్టాఫ్, సెకండాఫ్ సాధారణంగా తెలుగు సినిమాల ఫార్మాట్లో ఆలోచిస్తే... ఫాస్టాఫ్‌లో కొంత కథ చెప్పి, ఇంటర్వెల్‌లో కాస్త సస్సెన్స్ క్రియేట్ చేసి, సెకండాఫ్‌లో ప్రేక్షకుడు సంతృప్తి చెందేలా స్టోరీ నేరేట్ చేయడం లాంటివి చేస్తారు. అయితే ఈ సినిమా విషయంలో ఫస్టాఫ్, సెకండా అనే అనే తేడా కనిపించదు. ఇంటర్వెల్ కోసం ఏదో గ్యాప్ ఇవ్వాలి కాబట్టి ఇచ్చేసి....డైరెక్టర్ తాను చెప్పదలుచుకున్నది చెప్పుకుంటూ వెళ్లి పోయాడు. ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్ హీరో సుమంత్ బ్యాగ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ మైనస్ పాయంట్స్ కథ, స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ఎడిటింగ్ స్లో నేరేషన్ ఫైనల్‌గా చివరగా ఈ సినిమా గురించి చెప్పాలంటే..... రోటీన్‌గా సాగే ప్రేమకథా చిత్రం. సగటు ప్రేక్షకుడిని సర్‌ప్రైజ్ చేసే ఎలిమెంట్స్, భావోద్వేగానికి గురిచేసే సీన్లు ఏమీ లేవు. ఎంటర్టెన్మెంట్, కమర్షియల్ అంశాలుకూడా లోపించడంతో యూత్, మాస్ ఆడియన్స్ కనెక్ట్ అవుతుందని చెప్పలేం. నటీనటులు సుమంత్, ఆకాక్ష, సింగ్, అన్నపూర్ణ, కాదంబరి కిరణ్, మిర్చి కిరణ్, కార్తిక్ అడుసుమల్లి, మాస్టర్ సాత్విక్, బేబీ ప్రీతి ఆస్రాని తదితరులు నటిస్తున్నారు. తెర వెనక ఈ చిత్రానికి డీఓపీ: సతీష్ ముత్యాల, సంగీతం: శ్రవణ్ భరద్వాజ్, ఎడిటింగ్: సత్య గిడుతూరి, లిరిక్స్: కృష్ణ కాంత్, నిర్మాత: రాహుల్ యాదవ్ నక్క, కథ-మాటలు-స్క్రీన్ ప్లే- దర్శకత్వం: గౌతమ్ తిన్న సూరి.
