Devadas

Quite often, dons are portrayed in a comical way in our films. In several cases, they are reduced to caricaturish roles (when they are not the antagonist). In some cases, they're given a human touch and made the lead (Munnabhai MBBS comes to mind). Director Sriram Adittya sidesteps the stereotypes and manages to give his character a unique twist in his latest comic caper Devadas. With some cracking humour and well written dialogues, the film is thoroughly entertaining for most part of it. A tighter screenplay, less melodrama and a better climax — and this film could've been one for the ages. But for most part of it, Devadas is jolly good fun. 

We are introduced to Deva (Akkineni Nagarjuna), a dreaded gangster who's is baying for blood after his mentor is brutally killed by a rival gang. Being the most wanted criminal, the cops are determined to catch Deva. While on the run from the cops, an injured Deva stumbles into a clinic run by Dr Das (Nani), a sincere doctor who never tires of telling people he's a gold medallist. In strange circumstances, the two of them become friends. However, Das soon finds out that being friends with a wanted criminal is not as easy as it seems. 

The humour is absolutely spot on in Devadas, with Nani getting some hilarious dialogues. There are several moments when he brings the house down with his wisecracks. The writing is creative, and Nagarjuna is not your run-of-the-mill don. He loves to drink, longs for home food and likes spending time with people who don't fear him. The scenes involving the two stars are a riot, and film mainly revolves around them (rightly so). 

But while Devadas starts off well, it's hampered by an overdose of melodrama as the film progresses, with the sincere doc trying to convince the don to leave the life of crime. There's a car-chase sequence involving Naveen Chandra, who plays Nag's rival in the film — a scene which is excruciatingly long and boring. The climax too is weak, and lacks the punch the film needed. The director fails to strike a balance between the light-hearted moments and the melodramatic ones, hampering what is otherwise a hilarious film. Mani Sharma's music is decent but doesn't stay with you. 

But if there's one thing that makes watching Devadas worthwhile, it's Nani. The actor is in top form and delivers one of his funniest performances in recent times. Every time he introduces himself as Dr Das, MBBS, MS, Gold Medallist, you can't help but laugh — and there's a lot more from him in this film. Nagarjuna breezes through his role with effortless ease and his scenes with Nani are particularly wonderful to watch. Both Rashmika and Aakanksha deserved better character arcs, even though they play people of prominence. They're largely sidelined thanks to the Deva and Das show. Vennela Kishore, Rao Ramesh and Murali Sharma have short but effective roles and they're superb. 

Devadas certainly has its moments with some cracking humour and solid performances by its two stars. A tad too long, with some avoidable melodrama and a weak climax prove to be troublesome, but it doesn't take it away from a hilarious first half which makes it worth your while. If you're somebody who enjoys Nani's brand of humour - Devadas is a must-watch.



దేవా (నాగార్జున) ఒక మాఫియా డాన్. బయటి ప్రపంచానికి అతనెవరో తెలియదు. అంతా తెర వెనుక ఉండి నడిపిస్తుంటాడు. అనాథ అయిన తనను చేరదీసి ఆదరించిన వ్యక్తిని మాఫియాలోని వ్యక్తులు చంపేయడంతో దేవా వాళ్లపై ప్రతీకారం తీర్చుకోవడానికి హైదరాబాద్ వస్తాడు. ఆ క్రమంలో అతడిపై దాడి జరిగి బుల్లెట్ గాయం తగులుతుంది. ట్రీట్ మెంట్ కోసం అనుకోకుండా దాస్ (నాని) అనే డాక్టర్ దగ్గరికి వెళ్తాడు దేవా. చికిత్స తర్వాత అతడితో దేవాకు స్నేహం కుదురుతుంది. మరోవైపు దేవా కోసం పోలీసుల వేట కొనసాగుతుంటుంది. మరి దేవా వాళ్ల నుంచి ఎలా తప్పించుకున్నాడు.. దాసుతో అతడి స్నేహం ఎలాంటి మలుపులు తిరిగింది అన్నది మిగతా కథ.

‘దేవదాస్’ సినిమాకు సంబంధించి అతి పెద్ద ఆకర్షణ నాగార్జున-నానిల కాంబినేషనే. వీళ్లిద్దరి పాత్రలు.. వీళ్ల కెమిస్ట్రీ.. వీళ్ల కలయికలో వచ్చే సీన్లు ఎలా ఉంటాయన్న ఆసక్తి అందరిలోనూ నెలకొంది. ఆ విషయంలో నిరాశ ఏమీ లేదు. ఇద్దరి పాత్రలూ బాగానే ఉన్నాయి. డాన్ పాత్రలో నాగ్ కొంచెం కొత్తగా కనిపించాడు. తనదైన స్క్రీన్ ప్రెజెన్స్.. గ్రేస్.. స్టైల్ తో అలరించాడు. ఇక నాని డాన్ చేతిలో చిక్కి ఇబ్బంది పడే అమాయక డాక్టర్ పాత్రలో తనదైన శైలిలో వినోదం పండించాడు. ప్రతి సీన్లోనూ అదరగొట్టేశాడు. ఇక నాగ్-నాని కాంబినేషన్లో వచ్చిన సీన్లు చాలా వరకు పండాయి. కామెడీ బాగానే వర్కవుటైంది. కానీ సినిమా అంటే రెండు పాత్రలు మాత్రమే కాదు కదా? మిగతా పాత్రలకూ ప్రాధాన్యం ఉండాలి. కథ బలంగా ఉండాలి. కథనంలోనూ ప్రత్యేకత ఉండాలి. నీ ఈ విషయాలన్నింట్లోనూ ‘దేవదాస్’ నిరాశకే గురి చేస్తుంది.

ఎంతసేపూ నాగ్-నానిల మీదే ఫోకస్ చేసి.. వాళ్లను ఎంత బాగా చూపిద్దాం.. వాళ్ల బలాల్ని ఎలా ఉపయోగించుకుందాం అన్నదాని మీదే శ్రీరామ్ ఆదిత్య అండ్ కో దృష్టి పెట్టిందో ఏమో కానీ.. మిగతా అంశాల్ని నిర్లక్ష్యం చేసినట్లుంది. దీంతో ‘దేవదాస్’ సగటు సినిమాలా మిగిలిపోయింది. నాగ్-నానిల పాత్రల వరకు బాగున్నా.. వాళ్లిద్దరూ ఆకట్టుకున్నా.. వీళ్ల కాంబినేషన్ మీద ఉన్న అంచనాలకు తగ్గ కథాకథనాలు ఇందులో మిస్సయ్యాయి. దేశాన్నే గడగడలాడించే ఒక మాఫియా డాన్.. అమాయకుడైన ఒక డాక్టర్.. అనుకోకుండా వీళ్ల మధ్య స్నేహం కుదిరితే ఎలా ఉంటుందన్నది ఈ కథ. దీనికి ఎంచుకున్న సెటప్ అయితే బాగానే ఉంది కానీ.. కథను ముందుకు నడిపించే బలమైన అంశాలు ఇందులో లేకపోయాయి.

‘దేవదాస్’ ప్రధానంగా దేవా చుట్టూ తిరిగే కథ. ఐతే టైటిల్స్ దగ్గర.. ఆరంభంలో దేవా పాత్రకు ఇచ్చే బిల్డప్ చూసి కథ విషయంలో ఏదో ఊహించుకుంటాం. కానీ ఆ తర్వాత తేల్చేశారు. దేవా పాత్ర చుట్టూ ఉన్న బిల్డప్ కు తగ్గ సీన్లు సినిమాలో ఎక్కడా పడలేదు. దేవాను పట్టుకోవడానికి పోలీసులు చేసే హడావుడి కామెడీగా అనిపిస్తుంది. ముఖ్యంగా హీరోయిన్ రష్మికతో అండర్ కవర్ ఆపరేషన్ అంటూ చేసిన తమాషా గురించి ఎంత తక్కువ చెప్పుకుంటే అంత మంచిది. అసలు ఆమెను ఇలాంటి పాత్రకు ఎంచుకోవడమే రాంగ్ ఛాయిస్ అనిపిస్తుంది. దాని వల్ల సీరియస్ నెస్ మిస్సయిపోయింది. దేవా పాత్ర విషయంలో అంతకుముందు ఇచ్చిన బిల్డప్ అంతా కూడా తుస్సుమన్నట్లు తయారైంది. మాఫియా సెటప్ మొత్తం ఎక్కడా ఆసక్తి రేకెత్తించదు.దీన్ని పక్కన పెట్టి మాఫియా డాన్ అయిన నాగ్.. సామాన్యుడిలా కనిపిస్తూ నానితో కలిసి చేసే సందడి మాత్రం మెప్పిస్తుంది. వీళ్ల కాంబినేషన్లో సీన్లు చాలా వరకు వినోదాన్ని పంచాయి. మరీ కడుపు చెక్కలయ్యే కామెడీ కాదు కానీ.. ఓ మోస్తరుగా అయితే వినోదాన్ని పంచుతూ సాగిపోతాయి చాలా సీన్లు. ‘వారు వీరు’ పాట.. దానికి ముందు వెనుక సీన్లు బాగున్నాయి. ఈ పాటను చాలా లైవ్ లీగా.. సరదాగా చిత్రీకరించారు. ఈ పాటలో శ్రీరామ్ చూపించిన చమత్కారం.. ఈజ్ సినిమా అంతటా ఉంటే ప్రేక్షకుల ఫీలింగ్ మరోలా ఉండేది.

చాలా నెమ్మదిగా.. బోరింగ్ గా ఆరంభమయ్యే ‘దేవదాస్’ నాగ్ పాత్ర ప్రవేశం తర్వాతే ఊపందుకుంటుంది. ఇంటర్వెల్ వరకు కొంచెం జోరుగానే సాగిపోతుంది. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో డిఫరెంట్ ఎమోషన్లు పండించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు శ్రీరామ్. నాగ్-నాని మధ్య కాన్ ఫ్లిక్ట్ వచ్చే సన్నివేశం బాగుంది. నాని తనదైన శైలిలో ఎమోషన్లు పండిస్తూ ఆ సన్నివేశాన్ని నిలబెట్టాడు. ఐతే కథలో పెద్దగా మలుపులు కానీ.. కొత్తదనం లేకపోవడం మాత్రం నిరాశ కలిగిస్తుంది. అంతా అంచనాలకు తగ్గట్లు సాగిపోవడంతో చివరికి వచ్చేసరికి ఏముంది ఈ కథలో.. నాగ్-నాని కలిసి చేసేంత విశేషాలు ఏమున్నాయిందులో అన్న ఫీలింగ్ వచ్చేస్తుంది. సినిమాలో నాగ్-నానిలిద్దరూ వాళ్ల అభిమానులు కోరుకునేలా కనిపించారు. వాళ్ల కెమిస్ట్రీ సినిమాకు ఆకర్షణ. వీళ్లిద్దరూ అలా అలా టైంపాస్ అయితే చేయించేశారు కానీ.. ఈ కాంబినేషన్ స్థాయికి తగ్గ కథ కుదరకపోవడం ‘దేవదాస్’కు మైనస్ అయింది.

నాగార్జున డాన్ పాత్రలో కొంచెం కొత్తగా కనిపించాడు. ఆయన స్క్రీన్ ప్రెజెన్స్ బాగుంది.‘ఆఫీసర్’లో మాదిరి కాకుండా కొంచెం మంచి జోష్ తో కనిపించాడు నాగ్. చాన్నాళ్ల తర్వాత అభిమానుల్ని అలరించే రీతిలో దర్శనమిచ్చాడాయన. నానిని ఏడిపించే సీన్లలో నాగ్ నటన బాగుంది. ఐతే డాన్ పాత్రలో ఉండాల్సిన షేడ్స్ ఏమీ నాగార్జునలో కనిపించలేదు. నాని ఎప్పట్లాగే అదరగొట్టేశాడు. అతడి బాడీ లాంగ్వేజ్ కు తగ్గ పాత్ర కుదిరింది. అమాయకుడైన డాక్టర్ పాత్రకు నాని పూర్తి న్యాయం చేశాడు. కామెడీ సీన్లతో పాటు ఎమోషనల్ సీన్లలోనూ నాని మెప్పించాడు. ముఖ్యంగా దేవాతో ఘర్షణ పడే సీన్లో నాని నటన ప్రత్యేకంగా నిలుస్తుంది. హీరోయిన్లు ఇద్దరివీ నామమాత్రమైన పాత్రలు. రష్మిక పోలీస్ పాత్రకు అస్సలు సూటవ్వలేదు. కొన్ని సీన్లలో.. పాటల్లో రష్మిక అందంగా కనిపించింది. నటన పరంగా చెప్పుకోవడానికేమీ లేదు. ఆకాంక్ష సింగ్ పాత్ర కూడా అంతంతమాత్రమే. ఆమెకు స్క్రీన్ టైం కూడా చాలా తక్కువ. ఆమె కూడా కనిపించినంత సేపూ అందంతో ఆకట్టుకుంది. శరత్ కుమార్ చిన్న పాత్రలో మెరిసి మాయమయ్యాడు. నవీన్ చంద్ర గురించి చెప్పడానికేమీ లేదు. విలన్ పాత్ర చేసిన బాలీవుడ్ నటుడు కునాల్ కపూర్ కూడా ప్రత్యేకత చాటుకోలేకపోయాడు. మురళీ శర్మ క్యారెక్టర్ లోనూ విశేషం లేదు. వెన్నెల కిషోర్ ను ఉపయోగించుకోలేదు. సత్య.. నరేష్.. కొంతమేర నవ్వించారు.


మణిశర్మ పాటలు గొప్పగా లేవు. అలాగని తీసి పడేసేలా లేవు. ‘వారు వీరు..’ పాట.. దాని చిత్రీకరణ చాలా బాగున్నాయి. సినిమాలో ఇదొక హైలైట్. ఇంకో మంచి పాట ‘ఏదో ఏదో’ను కట్ చేసి పడేశారు. ఇలాంటి పాటను అలా చేయాలని ఎందుకనిపించిందో? మిగతా పాటలన్నీ మామూలే. నేపథ్య సంగీతం బాగుంది. శ్యామ్ దత్ ఛాయాగ్రహణం సినిమాకు ఆకర్షణ అయింది. సినిమా రిచ్ గా.. కలర్ ఫుల్ గా తెరకెక్కింది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు వైజయంతీ మూవీస్ స్థాయికి తగ్గట్లే ఉన్నాయి. ఇక సీనియర్ రైటర్లు సత్యానంద్.. భూపతి రాజా కలిసి తయారు చేసిన కథలో ఏమంత విశేషం లేదు. సినిమాలో వీక్ పాయింట్ కథే. శ్రీరామ్ ఆదిత్య స్క్రీన్ ప్లే పర్వాలేదు. శ్రీరామ్ స్టైలిష్ టేకింగ్ సినిమాకు ప్లస్. ఎంటర్ టైన్ మెంట్ పార్ట్ వరకు అతను ఓకే అనిపించాడు. హీరోలిద్దరినీ బాగానే వాడుకున్నాడు కానీ.. మిగతా పాత్రల్ని తీర్చిదిద్డంలో.. కథను చిక్కగా చెప్పడంలో.. ఒకే ఫ్లో  మెయింటైన్ చేయడంలో శ్రీరామ్ విఫలమయ్యాడు. అతడి డైరెక్షన్ ఓకే అనిపిస్తుంది.
