118

 In Alan Moore’s famed graphic novel V for Vendetta, there’s a line that goes, “Behind this mask there is more than just flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea... and ideas are bulletproof.” It’s almost like cinematographer-turned-director KV Guhan decided to play along with that thought and turn it into a gripping tale filled with innocence, love, smokescreens, deceit and murder. And boy, did he succeed for most part!

Goutham (Kalyan Ram) is an investigative journalist who loves off-roading, spending time with his loving fiancé Megha (Shalini Pandey), blow covers on corrupt politicians and such. One particular night, in a particular room at a resort, he dreams of Aadhya (Nivetha Thomas), a girl he has never met before. He sees her being beaten up bloody by goons and wakes up in a sweat. When he has the exact dream 6 months after; in the same room at the resort, he decides to dig deeper to find out if she really exists. In doing so, he uncovers a conspiracy that goes beyond a missing girl mourned by her father. 

To reveal more would be an injustice to all the knots Guhan and his character Goutham carefully untie, one by one, by the time the climax rolls. Is the film thrilling and without any distractions? Yes. Does it have a gripping enough story? Sure. But, 118 sure does have its share of flaws and unrealistic cinematic liberties taken, all brushed under the carpet by a tight screenplay by Guhan and stupendous editing by Tammi Raju, like that one shard of bloody glass the protagonist uncovers in the film. The one number the film has, composed by Shekhar Chandra only takes the story forward instead of proving to be a hindrance. The music composer even does a good job setting the mood with the BGM. Guhan does a stupendous job of jumping right into the middle of chaos, instead of wasting time with niceties, which is a refreshing move. The only exception is a fight scene in the beginning that seems to be put in for the sake of it. 

But the true hero of this tale is Nivetha Thomas who delivers a stupendous performance in the limited screen-time she has. Jr NTR was not fooling around when he said he had shed a tear after watching her in the film during 118’s pre-release event. Nivetha Thomas as Aadhya is a revelation, bringing to life her character’s innocence, loving nature, bravery, stubbornness for justice and even guilt with consummate ease. She breezes through her role, stealing the show, especially in a particular scene that requires her to show heart-breaking grief. 

Nandamuri Kalyan Ram too has improved, compared to some of his previous projects. And while he does flounder at certain key scenes, his performance remains consistently good for most part. With a character like his, it’s truly easy to think he’s meandering on the brink of madness, unless the actor manages to convince the audience the need to find this girl from his dreams. And Kalyan Ram does just that. 

While Shalini Pandey’s chemistry with Kalyan Ram is truly off-the-charts, it’s a mystery why she exists in this tale. Her character unfortunately has nothing much to do other than romance the hero, deliver generic lines to egg him on this journey and tag along on his adventures. In a film that requires you to invest in its characters, hers just doesn’t invoke any emotion from you. It also doesn’t help that Shalini Pandey delivers a strictly okay performance. 

Irrespective of the cracks in the story and missed logics, go watch this one for the edgy narrative. But be warned; do not try to dig too deep into it, for you might just miss out on a fine thriller that tries to deliver more than the usual heroics. Especially go watch this one for Nivetha Thomas and Kalyan Ram, you will not regret it. 

గౌతమ్ (కళ్యాణ్ రామ్) ఇన్వెస్టిగేటివ్ జర్నలిస్ట్. తనకు ఆద్యా ( నివేత థామస్ ) గురించి కల వస్తుంది. ఆ కల కు గౌతమ్ నిజ జీవితంలో జరిగే కొన్ని సంఘటలకు కనెక్షన్ ఉంటుంది. దాంతో నిజంగా ఆమె వుందా లేదా, అసలు ఆమె ఎవరు అని తెలుసుకోవడానికి ఇన్వెస్టిగేటివ్ చేస్తుంటాడు. ఈ క్రమంలో గౌతమ్ ఎలాంటి పరిస్థితులను ఎదుర్కున్నాడు. ఇంతకీ ఆద్యా ఎవరు ? ఆమె ఏం చేసేది? చివరికి ఆద్యా ను గౌతమ్ కలిశాడా లేదా ? అసలు 118 కి ఆద్యా కు వున్న సంబంధం ఏంటి అనేదే మిగతా కథ.

సినిమాకు మేజర్ ప్లస్ అంటే కాన్సెప్ట్ అనిచెప్పాలి. ఇక ఆ కాన్సెప్టు ని తెర మీదకు తీసుకురావడంలో గుహన్ చాలా వరకు సక్సెస్ అయ్యాడు. అలాగే సినిమాలో ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ చాలా ఇంట్రస్టింగ్ గా అనిపిస్తుంది. ముఖ్యంగా ఇంటర్వెల్ లో వచ్చే ట్విస్ట్ సెకండ్ హాఫ్ ఫై ఇంట్రస్ట్ ను తీసుకొస్తుంది.

ఇక నటీనటుల విషయానికి వస్తే ఈ సినిమాకు మరో ప్లస్ పాయింట్ కళ్యాణ్ రామ్. గౌతమ్ పాత్రలో చాలా బాగా నటించాడు. కొత్త మేక్ ఓవర్ తో కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ సినిమాలో ఎనర్జిటిక్ గా కనిపించాడు. అలాగే ఆధ్యా పాత్రలో నటించిన హీరోయిన్ నివేదా థామస్ తన నటన తో మెప్పించింది. కథ అంతా ఆమె చుట్టూ తిరిగేది కావడంతో సినిమాలో ఆమె కు మంచి పాత్ర దొరికింది. ముఖ్యంగా ఎమోషనల్ సన్నివేశాల్లో ఆమె నటన బాగుంది.

కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ కు సపోర్టింగ్ పాత్రల్లో నటించిన షాలిని పాండే , కమెడియన్ ప్రభాస్ శ్రీను వారి పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు. ఇక సినిమాకు బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ చాలా ప్లస్ అయ్యింది.అలాగే విజువల్స్ కూడా ఆకట్టుకున్నాయి.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్ విషయానికి వస్తే రొటీన్ స్టోరీనే. కాన్సెప్ట్ బాగున్నా దానికి తగ్గ కథను రెడీ చేసుకోలేకపోయాడు దర్శకుడు. ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ వరకు చాలా ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్ గా అనిపించినా సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో ఆ ఫీల్ మిస్ అవుతుంది. దానికి కారణం నివేదా థామస్ ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ ఎపిసోడ్. ఆ ఎపిసోడ్ చాలా రొటీన్ గా అనిపిస్తుంది. అలాగే సెకండ్ హాఫ్ చాలా వరకు ఊహాజనితంగా సాగడం కూడా సినిమాకు మైనస్ ఆయ్యింది.

ఇలాంటి ఒక మంచి కాన్సెప్ట్ కి స్క్రిప్ట్ లో డెప్త్ ఉంటే సినిమా మరో స్థాయిలో ఉంటుంది. కానీ ఈ సినిమా విషయంలో అది మిస్ అయినా ఫీల్ కలుగుతుంది. ఇక దానికి తోడు సినిమా అంతా సీరియస్ గా సాగడం కూడా అన్ని వర్గాల ప్రేక్షకులకు రుచించకపోవచ్చు.

మంచి కాన్సెప్ట్ ను సెలక్ట్ చేసుకున్న డైరెక్టర్ కే వి గుహన్ దానికి తగ్గట్లు గా కథను సిద్ధం చేసుకోలేకపోయాడు. కానీ సినిమా ను ఇంట్రస్టింగ్ గా చూపించడం లో చాలా వరకు విజయం సాధించారు. ఇక మిగతా టెక్నీషియన్స్ విషయానికి వస్తే శేఖర్ చంద్ర సంగీతం తో పర్వాలేదనిపించిన బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ తో మాత్రం ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. ఆయన నేపథ్య సంగీతం చాలా సన్నివేశాలను ఎలివేట్ చేసింది.

అలాగే ఈసినిమాకు డైరెక్టర్ కమ్ సినిమాటోగ్రఫర్ అయినా గుహన్ కెమెరామెన్ గా కూడా మెప్పించాడు. సినిమాలోని ప్రతి ఫ్రెమ్ చాలా రిచ్ గా కనిపిస్తుంది. తమ్మిరాజు ఎడిటింగ్ బాగుంది. మహేష్ కోనేరు నిర్మాణ విలువలు చాలా రిచ్ గా వున్నాయి.

సస్పెన్స్ థ్రిల్లర్ నేపథ్యంలో గుహన్ తెరకెక్కించిన ఈ 118లో కాన్సెప్ట్ , కళ్యాణ్ రామ్ , నివేదా థామస్ ల నటన హైలైట్ అవ్వగా సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో వచ్చే నివేదా ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ ఎపిసోడ్ మైనస్ గా చెప్పొచ్చు. చివరగా ఈ చిత్రం ఏ సెంటర్ ప్రేక్షకులకు బాగా నచ్చుతుంది. అయితే బి & సి సెంటర్ల ప్రేక్షకులు ఈసినిమా ని ఎలా రిసీవ్ చేసుకుంటారో చూడాలి.
