STORY: When two young hospitality students, Sahil Mehra and Mittee Deora, meet in a college in Shimla, it's apparently instant love for the two. But, is love as innocent and real as it seems? Perhaps not!

REVIEW: Sahil Mehra (Vardhan Puri) is your quintessential small-town boy -- docile, demure and someone you take home to meet your folks. And Mittee Deora (Shivaleeka Oberoi) is this big-city beauty, who is a smooth-talker and a charmer. They meet in college, fall in love and bam... starts a series of dark, twisted and very gripping chain of bizarre events.

This tale of warped and convoluted love is a story that deserves to be told. Vardhan (who is also the co-writer) has pulled off the different facets of his on-screen persona -- that of a soft-spoken guy hopelessly in love, an angry young man bubbling with revenge, a funny lad adding humour to the darkness, a sinner and the one who has been sinned against -- with equal and utmost ease. He owns the show from the first frame to the last, never losing his grip. The Puri scion is brilliant both as a first-time writer and a debutant actor. Vardhan romances with all heart and spews venom with all might. Shivaleeka, on the other hand, seems a little clueless at the start, but surprises during the second half. A note to her stylist: should have given the actress better clothes to wear!

The plot line of 'Yeh Saali Aashiqui' is based on the other side of love -- the one that's dark and brutal, vengeful and nasty. And so, the freshness of this romantic thriller is sure to win brownie points with the audience for its originality as the story keeps you on the edge. And, thanks to some witty writing, the red flags are dropped in so subtly that you if you take the liberty to blink just for once, then you will miss it! The narrative navigates through various alleys, ranging from psychotic breakdowns to long-buried secrets, and even the subsequent vengeful tendencies, thus making it a delightful watch.

The music and background score of 'Yeh Saali Aashiqui' is bang on -- the rapping bit is hilarious and rightly so. The background score heightens the drama and lends weight to some of the highlights of the film.

Yes, some parts of it seem all too convenient and the length could have been tighter. However, the story keeps you engaged throughout it's entire run-time.

Very casually, Vardhan pays tribute to his late grandfather and veteran actor Amrish Puri by reenacting an iconic scene from 'DDLJ' (hint: the one with the pigeons) and it brings back some good memories. Needless to say, Vardhan has shown immense range in his unconventional debut and is a talent to watch out for.

"लोग कहते हैं कि देश में लड़कियां असुरक्षित हैं, लेकिन सच तो यह है कि लड़के भी कुछ खास सुरक्षित नहीं हैं.." साहिल मेहरा, फिल्म का हीरो अपने दोस्त से यह संवाद करते हुए एक बदले की आग में भड़क रहा होता है। साहिल मेहरा (वर्धन पुरी) और मीति देवड़ा (शिवालिका ओबेरॉय) की मुलाकात शिमला के होटल मैनेजमेंट कॉलेज में होती है। जहां साहिल पहली नजर में ही मीति को दिल दे बैठता है। वहीं, कुछ मुलाकातों के बाद मीति भी प्यार का इज़हार करती है। लेकिन क्या इनका प्यार इतना सच्चा, इतना मासूम है? शायद नहीं। "ये साली आशिकी" प्यार का एक क्रूर, वीभत्स चेहरा दिखाती है, जो कि बाकी फिल्मों से काफी अलग है। इसके लिए फिल्म की सराहना होनी चाहिए।

फिल्म की कहानी कॉलेज के दिनों से होती हुई प्यार, धोखा, नफरत, पागलपन, प्रतिशोध तक पहुंच जाती है। मीति के प्यार में पागल में साहिल अपने दोस्तों और चाहने वालों से दूर हो जाता है। उसकी हिंसक प्रवृति बाहर आने लगती है, इसी का फायदा उठाते हुए मीति एक झूठी घटना में फंसाकर उसे पागलखाने तक पहुंचा देती है। अब यहां से शुरु होती है साहिल के नफरत की दास्तां। जिसे साहिल दिलोंजान से प्यार करता था, क्या उससे बदला ले पाएगा? यह देखने के लिए आपको सिनेमाघर तक जाना पड़ेगा। फिल्म की पटकथा के साफ है कि इसे वर्धन पुरी को बतौर हीरो लांच करने के लिए ही बनाया गया है। फिल्म के कुछ हिस्सों में जहां वर्धन कॉलेज छात्र के रूप में थोड़े शांत और सौम्य नजर आते हैं। वहीं, कुछ दृश्य में उनका पागलपन, ईष्या, गुस्सा और क्रूरता भी सामने आता है। निर्देशक ने उनके किरदार को हर बारीकी देने की कोशिश की है। अभिनय ही नहीं, बल्कि वर्धन पुरी ने इस फिल्म के संवाद और पटकथा पर भी काम किया है। अफसोस.. फिल्म का कमजोर हिस्सा भी वही रहा।

एक अच्छी कहानी को आप पर्दे पर कितनी प्रभावी ढ़ंग से उतार पाते हैं, यह निर्देशक की हाथों में होता है। यदि यहां चूक गए तो फिल्म औंधे मुंह गिरती है। "ये साली आशिकी" के साथ भी ऐसा ही हुआ है। निर्देशक चिराग रूपरेल इस रोमांटिक थ्रिलर को मनोरंजक बनाने में चूक गए हैं। फिल्म की कहानी आपको शुरुआत से ही बांधने में असफल रहती है। फिल्म के संवाद, संगीत, सिनेमेटोग्राफी, एडिटिंग सभी विभाग औसत हैं। और इन सबसे ऊपर फिल्म के कलाकार। एक फिल्म को पूरी तरह से अपने कंधों पर उठाने के लिए वर्धन पुरी को फिलहाल काफी मेहनत करने की जरूरत है। नकारात्मक अंदाज में वो जंचते हैं, लेकिन रोमांटिक दृश्य और डायलॉग डिलेवरी में कच्चे हैं। शिवालिका ओबेरॉय कुछ हद तक प्रभावित कर पाई हैं। उनके हाव भाव अच्छे हैं। वहीं, जॉनी लीवर के बेटे जेसी लीवर और रुसलान मुमताज़ को देखना दिलचस्प रहा।

कुल मिलाकर, यदि आपको मामूली रोमांटिक फिल्मों से अलग प्यार में संस्पेंस थ्रिलर का तड़का देखना पसंद है तो "ये साली आशिकी" देख सकते हैं। फिल्म में एक दृश्य अमरीश पुरी की याद भी दिलाता है, जहां वर्धन पुरी कबूतरों को दाना खिलाते हुए 'आओ.. आओ..' बोलते हैं। यह दृश्य आपको सीधे 'दिलवाले दुल्हनिया ले जाएंगे' के खेतों में खड़े अमरीश पुरी की याद दिलाएगी।
