Sab Kushal Mangal

STORY: A local politician and goon Baba Bhandari (Akshaye Khanna) is in the business of forced marriages of grooms. He abducts a young TV journalist for one such association, but ends up falling in love with the same girl. But will the bride-to-be reciprocate?

REVIEW: Welcome to Karnalganj – a town where a small-time politician rules big and makes a living out of fixing marriages forcefully. ‘Sab Kushal Mangal’ tries to serve up comedy in this problematic plot, but it isn’t funny. The film opens with Akshaye Khanna’s dramatic entry sporting a handle-bar moustache and long locks, looking anything but intimidating. The actor who is otherwise impressive with his acting chops tries hard to make his character work in this humdrum script. He fails to impress here.

Newcomers Priyaank Sharma and Riva Kishan are confident but there is barely any chemistry between the two. Priyaank shows some promise with his brooding looks but lacks the gusto required for the role of the firebrand journalist Pappu Mishra, who exposes wrongdoings on his show Musibat Odh Li Maine. Riva Kishan fares much better as Mandira, who speaks her mind, but sadly, her character has no agency when it comes to making important life decisions like marriage.

Talented actors such as Satish Kaushik, Supriya Pathak Kapur and Rakesh Bedi could have been utilised to their full potential. While the first half is erratic, the second half has some conflict, albeit predictable. Some of the scenes involving Akshaye Khanna and his cronies evoke laughter and the overall tone of the film remains light. The music is average and the songs are well shot, but most of them are untimely placed. This further makes the already long runtime of the film seem like a drag. The background score is too loud and jarring. The film’s narrative makes half-hearted attempts at underlining social ills like forced marriages and dowry, but never really takes a solid stand.

What works against the film is not its story but the execution that suffers from weak writing and missed opportunities for an impactful social satire.

कलाकार- अक्षय खन्ना, प्रियांक शर्मा, रीवा किशन, सुप्रिया पाठक, सतीश कौशिक 'जबरिया जोड़ी' के बाद पकड़वा विवाह पर एक और फिल्म आई है, जिसका नाम है 'सब कुशल मंगल'। कहानी है कर्नलगंज के एक लोकल नेता और गुंडा बाबा भंडारी (अक्षय खन्ना) की, जो लड़कों को जबरदस्ती पकड़कर उनका विवाह उन लड़कियों से कराता है, जिनका परिवार लड़के वालों को दहेज देने में असमर्थ है। यानि की उसकी नजर में वह एक परोपकारी है। इसी क्रम में वह एक टीवी पत्रकार पप्पू मिश्रा (प्रियांक शर्मा) को अगवा करता है, लेकिन यहां से कहानी मोड़ लेती है। भंडारी को उसी लड़की (रीवा किशन) से पहली नजर में प्यार हो जाता है, जिसके लिए उसने पत्रकार को अगवा किया था। अब लड़की की शादी किससे होती है, इसी के इर्द गिर्द घूमती है फिल्म की कहानी।

यह एक अच्छे विषय पर बनी कमजोर फिल्म है। इस कहानी में निर्देशक ने कॉमेडी घोलने की कोशिश की है, लेकिन असफल रहे हैं। अक्षय खन्ना पहली सीन में एकदम शानदार एंट्री लेते हैं, घुमावदार मूछें और लंबे बाल उनके किरदार पर फबता है। लेकिन अपने अभिनय से प्रभावित करने वाले यह कलाकार भी यहां कुछ अलग कर दिखाने में असमर्थ दिखे हैं। फिल्म के दोनों नए चेहरे प्रियांक शर्मा और रीवा किशन अपने किरदारों में अच्छे लगे हैं, लेकिन दोनों के बीच की कैमिस्ट्री ज़ीरो है। एक तेज तर्रार लड़की मंदिरा के किरदार में रीवा किशन ने पूरी तरह से न्याय बरतने कोशिश की है। कहना गलत नहीं होगा कि सभी किरदार कमज़ोर लेखन का शिकार बने हैं। सुप्रिया पाठक और सतीश कौशिक जैसे प्रभावशाली कलाकारों को उबाऊ संवाद दिये गए हैं। वो संवादों में जूझते हुए से दिखे हैं।

फिल्म का फर्स्ट हॉफ जहां थोड़ी दिलचस्पी जगाए रखता है, सेकेंड हॉफ में कहानी कहां जा रही होती है कुछ नहीं कहा जा सकता। कुछ दृश्यों में किरदार सिर्फ बेसिर पैर की बातें करते हैं, जिसका कहानी से भी कोई सरोकार नहीं है। बिजेन्द्र कारला के लेखन के साथ साथ प्रशांत सिंह राथौड़ की एडिटिंग भी एक कमज़ोर पक्ष है। फिल्म आपके ना दिल तक पहुंचती है, ना दिमाग तक। फिल्म सामाजिक संदेश देने में भी असफल रही है। निर्देशक करण विश्वनाथ कश्यप ने फिल्म को बोझिल बना दिया है। फिल्म में संगीत दिया है हर्षित सक्सेना ने, जो कि औसत है। गानों को अच्छे से फिल्माया गया है, लेकिन कहानी में कहीं भी फिट कर दिया गया है। लिहाजा, वह रुकावट सी लगती है। फिल्म 'सब कुशल मंगल' में पकड़वा विवाह, दहेज जैसे अहम मुद्दों पर फुसफुसा कर बात की गई है, लेकिन कोई ठोस विचार या तर्क नहीं रखा गया है। फिल्मीबीट की ओर से 'सब कुशल मंगल' को 1.5 स्टार।
