Love FM

Story: A love story that transcends generations with an unsolved mystery at the heart of it

Review: As Valentine's month comes to a close, movie-goers get a fare of love stories on the silver screen. Directed by debutante Sreedev Kappur and written by Saju Kodiyan, Love FM revolves around love that transcends two generations.

In quite a Shakespearean twist, Love FM is about a tragic love story that haunts the next generation. It starts with a Murphy radio and ends at an FM station. The love story of Gafoor and Rabiya couldn't succeed, but how will Ghazal and Rabiya Jr fare?

Love FM is blatantly Shakespeare meets Emily Brontë, only sans all the niceties. Except for the title, the movie lacks heavily in the emotional quotient. In the whole two hours of run time, the viewer is not made to invest in any of the characters or their emotions. It has a narrative fit for the 60s. If it were just for the retro effect in the flashbacks, it sort of works. But, since the present-day narratives don't get any better, one may think it wasn't done just for the effect. For a movie that runs a ticker stating 'violence against women is punishable by law' even when the men beat up each other, none of the female characters have any agency. There is no concept of choice or consent, even for the lead who is portrayed as fickle-minded. It must be remembered that great love stories were not made out of fickle-mindedness!

Sarath Appani is a good performer. If only he had something to do here. Malavika Menon reminds one of yesteryear actresses. But other than that, her character lacks dimension. It speaks more about the unidimensional writing than about the actors and their calibre.

Love FM has a visually appealing narrative. The frames are eye-catching in a cliched, music video-esque way. Bright, bold colours which provide contrast and ruggedness. The art direction deserves a pat on the back for a job done well.

Malayalam cinema has been blessed with a number of campus love stories that has made generations fall, guiltlessly and guilelessly, for cheesy romances. And, in spite of being a campus story that boasts of two love stories two generations apart, Love FM does not deserve a seat in that hall of fame. Love FM has a story that is as bland as its performances, that should have stayed on the 60s.

Kuthiraivaal

Kuthiraivaal Movie Review:  Manoj Leonel Jahson and Shyam Sunder’s directorial debut Kuthiraivaal brims with colours and striking imagery. This is apparent as early as its first scene, where its protagonist Saravanan alias Freud squirms in his bed, suspecting a bad omen. As some light fills his aesthetic apartment wrapped with vintage wall colours, his discomfort finally makes sense—for he has woken up with a horse’s tail! The scene is set up incredibly, leaving us excited for what is to come. But is the film as magical as the spectacle it presents on screen? Kuthiraivaal revolves around Saravanan (played by a brilliant Kalaiyarasan) and his quest to find out why he suddenly wakes up with a horse’s tail, and on the way, his existence in life. Saravanan’s universe is filled with colourful characters, almost magical yet just real enough—be it his whimsical neighbour Babu (Chetan), who speaks about his love for his dog and loneliness in the same breath, or the corner-side cigar...

Maaran

Even as early as about five minutes into Maaran, it’s hard to care. The craft seems to belong in a bad TV serial, and the dialogues and performances don't help either. During these opening minutes, you get journalist Sathyamoorthy (Ramki) rambling on about publishing the ‘truth’, while it gets established that his wife is pregnant and ready to deliver ANY SECOND. A pregnant wife on the cusp of delivery in our 'commercial' cinema means that the bad men with sickles are in the vicinity and ready to pounce. Sometimes, it almost feels like they wait around for women to get pregnant, so they can strike. When the expected happens—as it does throughout this cliché-ridden film—you feel no shock. The real shock is when you realise that the director credits belong to the filmmaker who gave us Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru, that the film stars Dhanush, from whom we have come to expect better, much better. Director: Karthick Naren Cast: Dhanush, Malavika Mohanan, Ameer, Samuthirakani Stre...

Gangubai Kathiawadi

STORY:  Based on S. Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges’ hard-hitting book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai,’ ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ chronicles Ganga’s rise to power and fame from a demure small-town girl in Gujarat, to the undisputed queen of kamathipura in Mumbai. REVIEW:  Women invitingly standing at the doorstep of a kotha (brothel) in the bustling bylanes of south Mumbai’s infamous red-light area Kamathipura, is a scene that is real, tragic and dramatic. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, set entirely against this gritty backdrop of Mumbai tells the story of many a young women, who were sold off to brothels for a few hundreds, solely through the eyes of its protagonist Gangubai (Alia Bhatt). It’s sometime in the early 1950s or 1960s when a starry-eyed and naïve Ganga is conned by her own lover Ramnik (Varun Kapoor) to elope with a promise that he will pave the path for her to make it as a heroine in Bollywood. What turns out and the truth as we all know i...
